A Smart Way to Support Aging at Home: My Conversation with Wisdom.io

Yesterday I had the pleasure of speaking with Cathy Minter, the Co-Founder and CEO of Wisdom.io. Our conversation centered around one of the biggest questions families face as their loved ones age: how can we help someone stay safely in their home while still respecting their independence?

For those of us who work closely with older adults and their families, we see this tension every day. Families want peace of mind. Older adults want privacy and independence. And traditional solutions do not always strike the right balance.

That is why I found Wisdom’s approach so compelling.

The Challenge Families Face

Nearly every family supporting an aging parent eventually asks the same question: what happens when no one is there?

Even when families have caregivers visiting during the day, there are still hours where a loved one may be alone. Overnight. Early in the morning. Between caregiver visits.

And while most older adults prefer to remain in their homes as they age, safety concerns can slowly push families toward more restrictive options like assisted living or nursing homes.

Technology has tried to address this problem before, but many of the solutions fall short. Wearable pendants are often forgotten. Cameras can feel intrusive. And many systems are designed more like surveillance than support.

Wisdom takes a different approach.

A Thoughtful Technology for Aging in Place

Wisdom is a smart home system designed specifically to support older adults living independently. Instead of relying on wearable devices or constant video monitoring, the system quietly learns normal activity patterns in the home and alerts family members if something unusual occurs.

The system includes a home hub and sensors placed throughout the home that detect movement patterns and potential falls. When something unexpected happens, such as a possible fall or a sudden lack of activity, alerts are sent to a “Trusted Circle” of family members or caregivers through a mobile app.

What I appreciate most is that it is designed to work in the background.

It is not something the older adult has to remember to wear or interact with every day. Instead, it quietly provides insight and reassurance to the people who care about them.

Privacy Without Compromise

One of the first concerns families raise about home technology is privacy. And rightfully so.

Wisdom addresses this thoughtfully. The system uses radar sensors and computer vision technology that represents activity using abstract “stick-figure” visuals rather than traditional video feeds, which helps protect the dignity of the person living in the home.

In addition, data is processed locally on the home hub rather than constantly sent to the cloud, giving families more control over who sees what information.

In other words, it provides situational awareness without turning the home into a surveillance system. That balance matters.

Extending the Care Plan

From a care management perspective, I also see Wisdom as a valuable tool between visits.

At EasyLiving, our care managers and caregivers may only be in the home for certain hours. Wisdom can help provide insight into what happens outside those visits. For example, it can highlight changes in activity patterns, unusual nighttime movement, or potential fall risks.

These insights can help families and care managers make more informed decisions about when to increase support or adjust a care plan.

In many ways, technology like this extends the reach of a care team without replacing the human relationships that are so important in aging services.

Bridging the Care Gap

Another reality we cannot ignore is the growing demand for care. By 2034, older adults are projected to outnumber children in the United States, while the care workforce continues to face shortages.

Solutions like Wisdom can help bridge that gap by supporting safety and awareness in the home when caregivers cannot be present 24 hours a day.

And for many families, 24-hour home care is simply not financially realistic.

Technology that fills those gaps responsibly is going to play an increasingly important role in helping people age in place successfully.

Why I’m Excited About It

What stood out most to me after speaking with Cathy was the thoughtfulness behind the product. It was clearly built with both families and older adults in mind.

It respects independence.
It protects privacy.
And it provides real peace of mind.

For families trying to support a loved one at home, that combination is incredibly powerful.

I look forward to exploring ways we can introduce this technology to many of our clients as another option to support safe, independent living at home.
